Even though I’m a fan of excess as a rule (you can never have too many bikes for example), when it comes to carrying essentials I’m the complete opposite. Even on day long MTB outings I’m reluctant to carry a Hydration Pack full of equipment. This has partly come from racing. I’ve come to really enjoy not having anything sitting on my back and prefer to stash things in my jersey pockets keeping light and nimble. It did come to a point though, where pocket real estate was getting slim and such brutes like allen keys were picking fights with such dedicates like mobile phones. There could be only one winner.
So I decided to go on the hunt for a saddle pack. I’m not even a fan of these either to be honest, especially the big bulky ones. I just feel as though they spoil the carefully considered lines of a bike, ruining the frame builders and designers hard work. However this little beauty from Lezyne caught my eye. Available in Small (for road tubes) and Medium (for MTB tubes) I went for the smallest option, which will actually fit in an MTB tube if you have a compact lightweight one. You can also squeeze in a C02 cannister and as usual Lezyne has added some useful and well considered design touches. Two slim internal pockets hold your tyres levels, whilst a pocket on the other side houses your patches. There is a small pocket underneath that also holds your multi-tool. A sealed zipper helps keep everything dry. All in all very tidy!
Another selling point to me was the fastening. Simple neoprene straps attach it to the rails of the saddle which means you can tension it to avoid any of those dreaded rattles. It’s also quick and easy to remove and clean. I’ve become such a fan of these I’m already thinking of getting them for my other bikes. Great for racing or quick blasts, although if you want more room then the Lezyne range also covers roomier options. Check them out.
